The 77 year old designer, Rei Kawakubo is more imaginative and adventurous than most. Even during a pandemic, work did not stop for her. Despite such a strange year, she pressed forward. “To create fashion and art, we need a mind to do outrageous things, to be different from others, and to let yourself go,” Kawakubo stated in a recent i-D interview.
Comme des Garçons Spring 2021 ready-to-wear collection was recently showcased in Kawakubo’s Tokyo office. Her theme of Dissonance, expressed abstract designs, classic silhouettes, creating attractive, feel-good clothes for women. With Mickey Mouse, Be@rbrick prints, she continues to revolutionize couture by mixing pop-culture references, while still centered in the here and now.
